Greens Motion to #SaveRadAd Set for Vote in Upper House Tomorrow

Greens MLC Tammy Franks will bring her motion of support for Radio Adelaide to a vote in the State Upper House tomorrow (Wednesday), with widespread cross-party support expected.

The #SaveRadAd campaign has garnered broad community support and seen more than 4800 people sign a petition calling on the University of Adelaide to keep the station on air.

"As Australia's first community radio station, Radio Adelaide holds an important place in the South Australian media landscape," Ms Franks said.

"Bucking the trend towards centralised radio programming, Radio Adelaide features stories about South Australians for South Australians.

"Over the past 43 years, many journalists, media personalities and musicians got their start at Radio Adelaide, which provides vital training and experience, particularly for young people starting out in the industry and fosters a fantastic volunteer culture.

"Radio Adelaide's diverse offerings ensure that a range of communities have unique access to the airwaves, including the LGBTI community, Indigenous communities and various ethnic and multicultural groups via community language programs.

"We know that the University of Adelaide is considering a number of options for its future following the sale of the station's current premises on North Terrace. We urge the university to secure Radio Adelaide's longevity, regardless of whether it continues to operate the station directly, or transitions it to a new entity," Ms Franks concluded.
