Member for Ballina to congratulate ‘Hidden Treasures’ of the region

NSW Greens Member for Ballina Tamara Smith MP will this week host the Hidden Treasures Honour Roll Ceremony in Ballina to recognise and pay tribute to the invaluable service of our rural women volunteers who give their time to support others in the community.

“This chance to recognise local women who may have gone about their work behind the scenes initially, but what they have delivered for our community will be forever treasured,” Ms Smith said.

The Hidden Treasures Honour Roll was born out of the NSW Rural Women’s Network and is coordinated by the NSW Department of Primary Industries.

This year in NSW 106 women have been recognised for their work in rural, regional and remote communities.

The following three local ‘Hidden Treasures’ will be formally recognised this Wednesday.

Rae Cooper (Byron Bay)
Rae Cooper has shown a dedicated commitment to healthcare services, and currently serves as a member of the Byron Shire Health Services Community Action Group and Byron Central Hospital Reference Group. Rae’s volunteer effort had been integral to the establishment of the new Byron Central Hospital.

Pamela McCrae (Suffolk Park)
A volunteer across numerous charity groups, Pam is a talented seamstress and craftswoman who weaves her art into her volunteer commitments. From teaching crafts to children with cancer at Camp Quality to establishing a weekly craft and sewing group to raise funds for charities, Pam’s creativity and passion has her recognised on the Honour Roll.

Janine Slater (Ocean Shores)
Janine champions for the provision of the best health care facilities for our region, volunteering on numerous committees and acting as a spokesperson for Northern Rivers Health at many forums. She’s been working hard to ensure the needs of the Mullumbimby Hospital community can be met within the new hospital framework at Byron Bay.

“While these women are being recognised as treasures, they too are an example of so many more who work behind the scenes in our community to support and nurture others.

“I look forward to personally congratulating them and hearing of their experiences as volunteers in our unique community,” Ms Smith said.
