MEDIA STATEMENT: Greens on Foreign Fighters - Senate debate gagged and still no Government amendments
Australian Greens spokesperson for legal affairs Senator Penny Wright says:
"These are the most significant counter-terrorism laws in our lifetime.
"They will fundamentally alter how everyday Australians go about their lives, but if the Abbott Government gets its way, the Senate will have less than a day to debate these laws.
"We are still yet to see the Government's amendments. It's just ridiculous to be bringing this bill to the Senate without even knowing what we're debating.
"It's plain to see the Government does not know what it's doing - and the Opposition is not much better.
"Labor has been talking up the need for accountability, but what are they going to do to ensure it?
"If they support the Abbott Government to gag debate this afternoon, they will be complicit in this despicable abuse of the Parliament."
