Live animal export company - Livestock Shipping Services – should have licence suspended

Commenting on a story on Lateline last night about cruelty to Australian animals in the Middle East, Greens spokesperson for animal welfare Senator Lee Rhiannon said:

“Livestock Shipping Services (LSS), the exporter of Australian animals that have suffered horrific abuse in Gaza, should have its export licence suspended until all investigations against it are completed.
“LSS is already under investigation for previous breaches of regulations in the Middle East, however there have been no prosecutions or charges laid.

“LSS is loading another ship full of sheep and cattle in Adelaide today, destined for the Middle East.  It is outrageous that the Department of Agriculture is putting more animals into the hands of LSS.

“These recent acts of animal cruelty could have been prevented if the Australian Government had the commitment and resolve to administer penalties for breaches of animal welfare regulations. However, time and again we have seen that Labor and the Coalition are not holding exporters to account.
“The only way to stop this cruelty, is to end live exports and move to chilled box meat.

“The Greens bill to end live exports is before parliament, and I will continue to pursue this.
