Greens MP Challenges Premier to Show Environmental Leadership Just Weeks Before World Parks Congress
Greens NSW MP and Environment Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, yesterday called on the NSW Premier to show environmental leadership and reverse his government's attacks on the environment with just weeks left before the once in ten year, World Parks Congress in an adjournment speech to the Legislative Council.
Dr Faruqi said:
"In just a few weeks, Sydney will play host to the World Parks Congress, a once-in-ten-year event that will bring together thousands of environmental experts to discuss the key threats to our environment including climate change, habitat destruction and dwindling biodiversity.
"The NSW Government should be embarrassed that at the same time Sydney is hosting this conference our environment is being attacked so savagely.
"Shamefully we are now a state that gives Queensland a run for their money in the destruction of environment. The O'Farrell and now Baird Government has a laundry list of polices that have vandalised our environment and our protected places.
"With just a few weeks until the congress, I give Premier Baird this challenge, demonstrate true leadership in the interest of our environment and community. It is not too late, Premier, be inspired by this conference to protect our planet, our parks and our people.
"Premier show at least some good faith to leave this state in an environmentally better condition than you found it - intergenerational equity is a key principle of ecologically sustainable development and it is our obligation to act on it.
"Premier, take action on climate change, introduce a container deposit scheme, remove the fishing amnesty in sanctuary zones, give 10/50 the chop, expand our protected areas and most of all make proactive decisions for a cleaner, greener future for NSW, its people and environment" she concluded.
