Sunswift solar car powers on to break world record
Media Release: 15 October 2014
A Greens motion congratulating the University of New South Wales Sunswift solar racing team for breaking a 26 year old world speed record for electric vehicles has unanimously passed the Upper House of the NSW Parliament this morning.
Greens NSW MP John Kaye, who moved the motion, said: "The NSW Upper House has once again come together to acknowledge the exciting and ground-breaking work of the University of New South Wales Sunswift solar racing team.
"The team did not just break the world record, they smashed it.
"The old world record stood at a speed of 73 km/h over 500km on a single battery charge.
"This week the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile confirmed that in its July attempt Sunswift recorded a speed averaging more than 100 km/h over 500km on a single battery charge.
"This is the second time in a year that the Upper House has moved a motion to congratulate the success of the Sunswift team and acknowledge the importance of innovation in the development of solar technology," said Dr Kaye.
