Big step forward for Casula community campaign against unwanted pub and pokies: Greens
Media release: 9 October 2014
After hearing evidence from community representatives and medical experts a recent Liverpool City Council Independent Hearing and Assessment Panel recommended that a proposed hotel in Casula should not be approved. The hotel, which would have included a prominent bar area and thirty poker machines, has been vigorously opposed by the community, prominent health and alcohol stakeholders and both Houses of the NSW parliament.
Greens NSW MP John Kaye, who moved the Upper House motion against the development, said, "The Casula community should be congratulated for their sustained efforts to resist this unwanted and dangerous development.
"Local residents have had to work extremely hard to achieve a positive outcome at the IHAP.
"The Casula community and their supporters have had to go to extraordinary lengths to make sure their voice was heard. Access to information was rejected and bureaucratic roadblocks were thrown up at almost every turn.
"Some of those in positions to stop this appeared to have made their mind up early in favour of the development regardless of community opinion.
"The development was proposed by the owners of one of the most dangerous venues in NSW. It would have introduced thirty poker machines into an already disadvantaged and at risk area.
"The decision by the IHAP is not the end of this matter. I urge the Liverpool City Councillors to reflect on this result and listen to the community's wishes.
"The motion I moved in opposition to the development was unanimously supported by all members of the NSW upper house. I hope that the community's local representatives will develop the same understanding of the impacts this development could have on Casula households," said Dr Kaye.
