Get the message, Prime Minister: Victorians want public transport funding
In the wake of the Liberals' defeat at the Victorian election, the Greens will move in the Senate to call for the $3 billion earmarked for the East West toll road to be redirected to investment in public transport in Victoria.
"Victorians sent a clear message to the Abbott government at the Victorian election," said the Australian Greens spokesperson for transport and infrastructure Senator Janet Rice.
"This was the election that the Prime Minister billed as 'a referendum on the East West Link'.
"The results are in and it's clear that Victorians want investment in public transport over expensive polluting toll roads.
"We have a new government and a big swing to the Greens in inner Melbourne, electing Ellen Sandell in Melbourne on the back of her clear and consistent objection to the East West Link proposal.
"Tony Abbott needs to stop blindly pandering to big business and start listening to the people.
"The Prime Minister needs to do what's in the best interests of Victorians and redirect his $3 billion of promised funds to the public transport upgrades that Victoria desperately needs."
"We will relieve Melbourne's congestion by building a world-class public transport city."
