Tony Abbott must allow conscience vote on marriage: Greens
Tony Abbott must allow all Coalition members a conscience vote on marriage equality following the introduction of Senator Leyonhjelm's same-sex marriage bill, the Australian Greens have said.
"Tony Abbott needs to stop gagging his members and give them a conscience vote on this important issue," the Greens' LGBTI spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"Marriage equality's time came long ago and most Australians are just waiting for Tony Abbott to catch up.
"There is no point in delaying this essential reform and I look forward to working on this with Senator Leyonhjelm and members from all sides of politics.
"The Greens are the strongest supporters of marriage equality in the Parliament. We have always voted for equality and will continue to do so, long into the future.
"It's high time the Abbott government recognised that discrimination has no place in 21st century Australia."
