Government Calls WestConnex highest priority for NSW; Only 14% Agree

NSW Greens MP and Transport Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has commented on today's Daily Telegraph/Galaxy poll which shows that after millions spent on trying to convince the public about the need for the WestConnex toll road, only 14% identified the toll road as the highest priority.

Dr Faruqi said:

"Clearly, WestConnex is the highest priority of only private motorway operators and receivers, because they are the only ones who will benefit once WestConnex falls over and is bailed out by tax payers.

"Only 14% of people want WestConnex while almost one in five see light rail as a bigger priority which further shows that the Government's priorities for infrastructure spending is totally misplaced.

"Even after millions spent in advertising and promotion, people won't be tricked into supporting a project they know has no business case and that will promote, not solve congestion.

"Contrary to what the Government says, the alternative to WestConnex is not do nothing, but rather invest in upgrading the current system and building integrated transport linkages to reduce congestion" Dr Faruqi concluded.
