Greens MP says Christian Democrat’s Proposed ‘Sunset Clause’ on Zoe’s Law would Subject Women to an Appalling 2 Year Experiment
Greens NSW MP and Spokesperson for the Status of Women, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has responded to news that Rev Fred Nile MLC will introduce a sunset clause on the proposed foetal personhood law, also known as Zoe’s Law, which would cause the bill to expire after two years.

Dr Faruqi said:

“Rev Fred Nile’s amendments are deeply offensive and would subject women to an appalling two year experiment. This amendment has no effect at all on the worst aspects of the Bill.

“Enacting foetal personhood in any shape, way or form risks women’s reproductive health and rights.

“To subject women to a trial to take away their rights and autonomy is unacceptable.

“This bill, amended or unamended, poses dangerous threat to women’s rights and the Greens will continue to work with the community to defeat it.

“Too many women have fought, and continue to fight, for their reproductive rights to have them plunged into the dark ages by regressive laws such as this.

“Groups such as the Australian Medical Association and the Bar Association as well as countless other medical and legal experts and women’s rights advocates have pointed out the irredeemable flaws in the bill and yet there are still politicians ready to support it” Dr Faruqi concluded.
