Minister Upton Must Restore Funding to Women’s Homelessness Services

Greens NSW MP and Spokesperson for the Status of Women, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, continues to call on the government to stop putting women at risk and restore certainty and funding to the women’s homeless services.

“Minister Upton must show leadership in her new role and restore funding to women’s homelessness services in Sydney.

“Some services are already closing despite being essential to the wellbeing of many in our community, for no reason other than the budget bottom line.

“The situation seems chaotic at the Department of Family and Community Services, with recent news that service providers are now having their contracts extended by a month, despite many having already planned to make staff redundant and cease services.

“Vulnerable women and service providers deserve better that month by month decision making on their future.

‘The closure of women’s refuges will leave the most vulnerable in our community homeless, especially women who are escaping domestic violence.

“Locking out specialist services will leave women and their children without a home and much needed long term support services.

“The Government must provide long term certainty for the continued operation of much needed specialist services”, she concluded.
