Greg Barber MLC, leader of the Victorian Greens, said new modelling by
Bloomberg New Energy Finance shows Victorians will lose clean energy jobs
and lower long-term energy prices if the federal government cuts the
Renewable Energy Target (RET).

Greg Barber said, "The Liberals are stifling the development of our
renewable energy resources, which means Victoria misses out on jobs and
other benefits.

"The Bloomberg New Energy Finance modelling shows the Renewable Energy
Target (RET) will cut the cost of energy for households and businesses,
plus bring jobs.

"The Renewable Energy Target was designed to bring environmental benefits,
cutting our emissions, but it is also producing an economic dividend.

Bloomberg found:
* Cutting back or abolishing the target will threaten 7,000 - 11,000
future clean energy jobs every year up to 2020
* Keeping the 45TWh target will generate 24,800 each year up to 2020
* Over the long term the target will save consumers $2 billion per year
(2015-2030)
* If the RET is abolished then small scale solar PV will be Australia?s
only viable clean energy industry

"Liberal Party Premier Denis Napthine has no plan for Victoria and how we
can reap the economic benefits of clean energy.

"Rather than protecting a monopoly for one power source, we need to
encourage competition between them to reduce prices.

"The Greens will take on the monopoly power of the energy companies, in
the interests of Victorians and our environment.

"The Greens support the Renewable Energy Target and will remove the laws
that have stopped the wind industry in its tracks, unlocking billions of
dollars in new investment for Victoria?, said Mr Barber.
