Childcare Survey launched as families lose $6,000 in Budget cuts to childcare

With more than half a million families set to be affected by the Abbott Government’s cuts to childcare, the Australian Greens have launched a National Childcare Survey<http://childcarepoll.com/> today.

“These cuts mean some families will be $6,000 a year worse off but it’s the low income families, who will lose $3,000 a year, that’ll be doing it really tough,” the Greens’ childcare spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“This Budget has ripped millions of dollars out of the pockets of mums and dads around the country and it’s time that families had their say.

“The Greens’ National Childcare Survey, launched today at childcarepoll.com<http://childcarepoll.com>, will give average Australian families a voice.

“The Government is refusing to listen to calls for an increase in support from parents and the childcare sector alike.”

Under questioning from Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, Education Department officials have revealed that up to 600,000 families will be affected by the Abbott Government’s cuts to the Childcare Benefit and the Childcare Rebate, as announced in the Budget.

“These cuts will mean that more than half a million families with children in care will find it harder to make ends meet,” Senator Hanson-Young said.

“The Greens will vote to block these harsh changes in the Senate, helping to keep childcare affordable for thousands of families around the country.

“With a tax to go to the doctor and an increase in the cost of childcare, this Budget will significantly increase Australian families’ cost of living.”
