Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber says energy bills and greenhouse
emissions will increase after the state government moves to scrap an
energy saving scheme.
Mr Barber said "this scheme has helped hundreds of thousands of homes and
businesses save money on their power bills, with free or low cost devices
like light bulbs and solar hot water heaters.
"The government?s own report shows homes that participate would save
thousands off their energy bills and for businesses, tens of thousands.
"This scheme supports 1700 jobs, mostly in small businesses that do the
installations and some in manufacturing.
"This first decision by the new energy Minister Russell Northe is a
stinker. Expect many more like it. He's a captive of the coal industry.
"People need to realise that it is official state government policy not to
do anything about greenhouse emissions. That is clearly stated in their
report.
"Greg Hunt was recently talking about schemes like this as an example of
how his Direct Action plan would work. With the scrapping of his million
solar homes plan, what's left for him to do?
"The report makes the amazing claim that if energy use falls, energy
generation plants won't close. Has anyone told them we've got 2500
megawatts of fossil fuel plants in mothballs across eastern Australia?
"Their own modelling showed that continuing the energy saving scheme would
push down energy prices by as much as two cents per kilowatt hour on your,
my and everyone's energy bills. That's gone now," Mr Barber said.
