Greens stand up for LGBTI rights at Equal Love rally
Media statement, Saturday 17 May 2014.
WA Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren will be speaking at the Equal Love rally in Perth at 1:30pm today to celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) whilst campaigning for same-sex marriage rights in the State.
"At a State and Federal level the Greens are working hard for equality. In WA, I introduced a same-sex marriage bill which is designed to resist a High Court challenge.
"I'm excited to speak at the rally and stand alongside many Western Australians that believe it is time for change.
"There is overwhelming evidence that whilst allowing same-sex marriage does not deride the definition of marriage - denying it deteriorates physical and mental health. This bill will allow gay and lesbian couples to feel like any other Australian family where marriage is an accessible symbol of lifelong commitment".
With same-sex marriages now going ahead in 17 countries across the globe, Ms MacLaren emphasised that now more than ever 'Australia is falling further behind on this social justice issue that has a simple remedy'.
"The Greens have been fighting for marriage equality with bills in federal and state parliaments", Ms MacLaren said.
"There is some hope, now that a Federal cross-party committee has been established, to continue pushing for reform federally. It's time for Tony Abbott to allow a conscience vote on equality. If that happens, then there is a good chance of achieving Marriage Equality in Australia which is long overdue", Ms MacLaren said.
With same-sex marriages now being performed in countries such as the UK, Wales and New Zealand, Greens Senator Hanson-Young has introduced a bill in the Senate that would give legal recognition to international same-sex marriages in Australia.
"It is important that Australia allows same-sex marriages, not only because it will mean any two people who wish to have their loving relationship recognised by marriage will be able to do so, but also as an important symbol against homophobia and transphobia", Ms MacLaren said.
"Today we acknowledge the increasingly improving rights of LGBTI people internationally, but also acknowledge that there is a long way to go".
