Senate inquiry launched into Greens’ international same-sex marriage bill
The Senate has launched an Inquiry into the Greens’ international same-sex marriage bill, which will look at what effect passing marriage equality laws has had in other countries.
“Recognising international same-sex marriages will mean that gay Australians who wed overseas won’t have to leave their marriages at the customs gate,” the Greens’ LGBTI spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“Politicians in Australia need to understand that there is nothing to fear when it comes to marriage equality
“Other countries, including New Zealand, are reaping the social and financial rewards that come with equal marriage and it’s time Australia caught up.
“With more and more countries passing marriage equality laws, Australia is becoming increasingly isolated in the international community.
“Every day that passes takes Australia one step closer to achieving this essential reform, but we have to keep the pressure up.
“It’s only by working together, across party lines and across the community, that we will ever see gay and lesbian relationships recognised as equal in Australia.”
