SA Greens join nation-wide call for Portable Long Service Leave
Today Greens MPs in the Commonwealth, State and Territory Parliaments are uniting to call for an Australia-wide scheme to deliver Portable Long Service Leave for all working Australians.
SA Greens Industrial Relations Spokesperson Tammy Franks MLC says:
"Even though more Australians are working longer less are qualifying for long service leave as our workplaces modernise. It is vital we take urgent steps to retain some work-life balance, especially after ten years of employment service.
"Long service leave makes it possible for workers to take a much needed break every ten years. This is a chance to see Australia, reconnect with family and friends, or just recharge batteries after a decade working for the next ten years.
"It is rare that a worker stays in the same company for the duration of their working life anymore, the transience and casualisation of the workforce makes portable Long Service Leave a necessary modernisation of the traditional, and increasingly rare, entitlement.
"More than 90 per cent of employment growth over the past 20 years has been in casual and contract work where long service leave is unavailable.
"We are calling on all parliamentary parties to debate and support this much needed reform to give working people well-earned rest every ten years.
"The flexibility we demand of our workers should be reflected by the flexibility of their entitlements," Ms Franks concluded.
Tammy Franks Greens MLC will move a motion in State Parliament to call support for portable Long Service Leave.
