Government cruelty challenged in the High Court

The Australian Greens have welcomed today's High Court challenge to the government's cruel and inhumane detention camp on Manus Island.

"It's the Australian Government's cruelty that's being challenged today," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

"We'll have to wait to find out if Manus Island is unconstitutional, but what we already know is that it's untenable.

"The Manus Island camp is cruel, costly and extremely dangerous and needs to be shut down sooner rather than later.

"The attack on the camp, which left one man dead and dozens seriously injured, only served to highlight the danger that has always been present.

"The lack of certainty around processing contributed to the tension and violence in February and the Australian Government is accountable for that.

"Australia's once strong commitment to human rights and a fair go for all is under attack.

"Our international reputation is being trashed by the turbo-charged cruelty that is taking place on Manus Island and Nauru."
