Government Must Take Opportunity to introduce Tilt Trains on Intercity Services
Greens NSW MP and Spokesperson for Transport, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has called on the government to ensure that it purchases trains with tilting train technology to speed up transport times on intercity services. The Government has announced it will be purchasing a new inter-city fleet.

"Whilst I welcome the purchase of a new fleet for intercity trains, I am concerned that the Minister will not take the opportunity to transform the way NSW travels by introducing tilt train technology.

"NSW could finally catch up with Japan, the United States and Europe.

"Tilt train technology could increase speeds by up to 40% on some of these lines.

"We will soon see whether this government is serious about improving the commuting experience and cutting travel times for inter-city services, or like so many other decisions it has made, it will be another missed opportunity.

"I urge the Minister to spend less time thinking about how to squeeze more money out of commuters and more on how to actually improve public transport -commuters are much more interested in making their journeys faster and more convenient.

"Shortening the time taken to travel between Sydney and Newcastle for example would take significant pressure off the M1 and Pennant Hills Road, which is a much more efficient and sustainable solution than the expensive and polluting NorthConnex", Dr Faruqi concluded.
