NSW Parliament refuses to recommit to Ecologically Sustainable Development
Greens NSW MP and Environment spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC's motion for the government to recommit to Ecologically Sustainable Development has been defeated by the Legislative Council.

Dr Faruqi said: "This motion on Ecologically Sustainable Development is about acknowledging the critical role that ecologically sustainable development principles play in transforming to a more sustainable economy and society.

"Whilst I am disappointed, it is unsurprising that the Coalition would refuse to commit to Ecologically Sustainable Development, given the environmental vandalism of the O'Farrell and now Baird Government.

"This is a government that makes environmental decisions based on short termism and special interests over ecological science and environmental protection.

"For example, there are numerous studies that prove the danger of what this government is doing to the environment, from introducing horses, which are known vectors of weeds, into wilderness areas to allowing fishing in marine sanctuary zones.

'The proposed planning laws, which would be disastrous for both communities and the environment, specifically remove the principles of ecologically sustainable development.

"The precautionary principle is about learning from past mistakes and not repeating them, it is about preventing damage.
"At a time of so much turmoil and allegations of inappropriate wheeling and dealing, the government still refuses to listen to community demands a precautionary approach to protecting our environment and our people.

"We have to reform to ensure a better and safer future for our people, our ecosystem and biodiversity. This is only possible through serious commitment to ecologically sustainable development and actions that safeguard our environment and our wellbeing", Dr Faruqi said.
