Manus Island Inquiry revealing offshore Hell
Further submissions made to the Senate's Manus Island Inquiry have shed light on the horrific conditions inside the centre, including regular sexual assaults and beatings, the Australian Greens have said.
"There is a toxic culture inside the Manus Island detention camp," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"The Australian Government is running a gulag in which sexual assaults, brutality and racism are rife.
"The explosion of violence in February was inevitable because of the pressure cooker situation on Manus Island and, alarmingly, things are heating up again.
"Australia's once proud human rights record is being dragged through the mud because of the government's appetite for cruelty.
"As more Australians begin to understand the truth about Manus Island and Nauru, the chorus of voiced calling for their closure is continuing to increase in volume.
"Manus Island is untenable and must be shut down."
