Greens announce NSW Upper House team for 2015 election
Media release: 4 May 2014
John Kaye, Mehreen Faruqi, Justin Field will head up the Greens NSW Upper
House team in the March 2015 election, the party's Returning Officer Seamus
Lee announced today.
Declaring the results of a state-wide postal ballot of all members of the
party, Mr Lee said: "The Greens NSW have a fundamental commitment to
grassroots democracy. While NSW Labor is engaged in an internal brawl over
reforms to their preselection system, thousands of Greens members have
engaged in a truly democratic process to elect their candidates for the
Upper House.
"The final results of the ballot will be confirmed by the party's governing
body, the State Delegates Council, in June," Mr Lee said.
Greens NSW MP John Kaye, who will lead the ticket, said: "The Greens have
chosen a strong ticket to promote our vision of clean politics, new jobs
in renewable energy, a healthy environment and revitalised public
services.
"The crisis of corruption in NSW politics demands a new direction and the
Greens have a long track record of campaigning against tainted donations
and influence peddling.
"I am looking forward to working with my colleagues, as well as Jamie
Parker in Balmain and Jenny Leong in Newtown," Dr Kaye said.
Greens NSW MP Mehreen Faruqi said "I'm honoured to have been preselected by
NSW Greens members for our Upper House ticket.
"With the Liberal party embroiled in scandal and NSW Labor already
discredited, the Greens lead the way for grassroots democracy.
"I'm looking forward to continue campaigning across the state and working
with our communities to focus on integrity in politics, investment in our
public services and ensuring the protection of our natural environment,"
Dr Faruqi said.
Justin Field, who is third on the ticket, said "A stench of corruption now
hangs over NSW Parliament, but only the Greens are able to say they can
clean up politics."
The Party's candidate for Newtown Jenny Leong said: "I am looking forward
to working with the Upper House team to advance a renewed, community-driven
agenda.
"We will be focused on running a strong community campaign that focuses on
action against inequality and injustice, dangerous climate change, and
corrupt politics," Ms Leong said.
