Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber is pledging to fight to reverse the
decision to introduce commercial kangaroo culling to Victoria.
"The Napthine government is giving in to pressure from the National
Party," said Greg Barber MLC
"This will undermine Victoria's legitimate livestock industry. Livestock
farmers go to great lengths to comply with animal welfare, meat quality
and safety, but this gives them a new competitor who doesn't have to meet
the same standards."
"Its a nonsense to say that these are kangaroos that would have been
killed anyway. Permits are handed out willy nilly, there's close to zero
supervision and now that there's a quid to be made, everyone will want
one."
"Don't call it a 'sustainable' industry; no-one can even tell us how many
kangaroos were killed last year. Permits to kill a certain number are
issued, but there's no requirement to report back how many were killed."
"We know from other states there will be lax supervision of meat handling
to prevent contamination and human illness. It's pretty hard to get a
permit to sell meat from livestock slaughtered in the paddock, but now you
can shoot a kangaroo, throw it on the back of the truck and later sell it
for human consumption."
"We will be campaigning to reverse this decision," said Mr Barber
