‘Not In My Name’: high profile Australians take a stand against offshore cruelty
A group of high profile Australians, including the Greens’ immigration spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, have today signed a petition calling for the closure of the offshore detention camps on Manus Island and Nauru as part of the new ‘Not In My Name’<notinmyname.com.au> campaign.
“The Abbot Government’s cruelty has clearly gone too far,” Senator Hanson-Young said.
“People from across Australia have already signed up and told Tony Abbott that Manus Island and Nauru are not being run in their names.
“Reza Barati’s was killed while he was in the Government’s care and many Australians realise that that is simply unacceptable.”
People are now able to go to notinmyname.com.au and sign their name to the petition calling on Tony Abbott to close the offshore camps.
“The Immigration Minister clearly cannot guarantee the safety of the people in the Manus Island camp. With reports that locals who were involved in the attacks have been let back into the centre, tensions are rising again and the centre has become untenable.
“It’s time for the detention camps to be closed and, as more and more people declare that this cruelty is not being done in their names, the Government must sit up and take notice.”
