Greens MP to attend the opening of the duck shooting season
Friday 14 March 2014
Who: Sue Pennicuik MLC, Victorian Greens Animal Welfare spokesperson
When: Saturday 15 March, sunrise
Where: Northern Victoria
Victorian Greens Animal Welfare spokesperson Sue Pennicuik MLC will attend
the opening of the duck shooting season, in northern Victoria.
"It is disappointing that Victorians have to endure another three months
of state sanctioned slaughter of native water birds, that for the rest of
the year are protected," Ms Pennicuik said. "Duck shooting should be
banned in Victoria as it is in NSW, Qld and WA and it's never been
permitted in the ACT.
"On the opening morning of the season last year, hundreds of birds,
including rare and threatened species, were massacred by around 150
shooters at the Box Flat private wetland near Boort in Minister Walsh?s
electorate," Ms Pennicuik said.
"Despite a police and DEPI investigation where shooters who admitted being
present and the landowners were interviewed, no-one saw anything and no
charges have been laid.
"The government's response to this appalling behaviour at Box Flat has
been to introduce anti-democratic laws to increase penalties for citizens*
who are trying to rescue wounded birds.
"I hope we won't see a repeat of that episode, but every year, endangered
and protected species are shot at wetlands around Victoria and that is
unacceptable. The only way to prevent it is to put a stop to the whole
thing," Ms Pennicuik said.
