Liberals At Odds On Parks
Tony Abbott's crusade against National Parks and World Heritage is ringing alarm bells in South Australia, just a week out from election day.
"The Prime Minister is promising to undo protection (including World Heritage protection) for vast tracts of Tasmania. The question is: Will his State Liberal colleagues do the same?" asked Mark Parnell MLC, Parliamentary leader of the Greens SA.
" We already know a State Liberal Government would seek to undo Marine Parks, but what of our land-based Parks? Is any part of South Australia safe under a Liberal Government?"
"The Liberals are promising a handful of extra park rangers, which is welcome, but will they be managing parks for conservation or for mining and other extractive industries?"
"Stephen Marshall needs to come clean on whether he agrees with the Prime Minister that Australia has too many conservation areas. If he does, which SA Parks are in his sights?"
"Will a Marshall Government also oppose the World Heritage listing of the Mt Lofty Ranges Agrarian Landscape? This is a project that is supported by industry and local government and offers a great marketing advantage to our wine and food producers to help grow the economy and create jobs. Will a Marshall Government oppose all this?"
"All South Australians have the right to know whether the anti-environment agenda of the Federal Liberal Government is a fore-taste of things to come in South Australia under a State Liberal Government".
"We need to be protecting our conservation reserves, not tearing them apart", concluded Mark Parnell.
What he said:
Prime Minister, Tony Abbott speaking at a forest industry dinner in Canberra on 4th March: "We have quite enough National Parks, we have quite enough locked up forests already. In fact, in an important respect, we have too much locked up forest."
