Senate supports workplace gender reporting in face of uncertain future
The Senate has today passed a Greens' motion supporting the workplace gender reporting that the Abbott Government is reportedly considering weakening.
"The Abbott Government is reportedly considering weakening workplace gender reporting to apply it to fewer workplaces, even though it provides important information to drive action on achieving equal pay," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens spokesperson for Women, said.
"It's unacceptable that there's still a 17 per cent gender pay gap in Australia today.
"With International Women's Day on Saturday, it serves as important reminder that we must tackle this shameful pay gap.
"How can we tackle this inequity, if we don't even have basic data to track how we're going?
"We're pleased the Senate has today recognised the importance of workplace gender reporting and hope this will help safeguard its future," Senator Waters said.
