Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber has welcomed the move by inner city
councils to overturn approval of the East-West toll road in the Supreme
Court.
"The approval was made under the Major Transport Projects Facilitation
Act*. The law was brought in by Labor in 2009, aiming to override decades
of environmental protection law," Mr Barber said.
"I hope the case succeeds and Labor and Liberals rethink their support for
the East-West toll road.
"The Liberals are still trying to rush through secretive contracts which
Labor says it will honour.
"If Labor joined the Greens in opposing the toll road, even if the
contracts were signed, no company would want to commit to the project
before the November election.
"It’s not just inner city councils who oppose this toll road. Suburban and
regional councils know the $18 billion would be better invested in public
transport for all of Victoria,” Mr Barber said.
