Greens Welcome 36th Annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

Greens NSW Spokesperson for Sexuality and Gender Identity, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, and Greens LGBTI Spokesperson, Councillor Matthew Robertson, have welcomed the 2014 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Both will be marching on the Greens float in the parade on Saturday night.

Dr Faruqi said:

"The Sydney Mardi Gras is one of the most important LGBTI pride events in the world.
"Given the disgusting examples of anti-gay laws and campaigns that we have seen this year alone around the world, including in Russia and Uganda, it is important that public expressions of pride like this take place.

"I am particularly excited that the theme is 'kaleidoscope' to celebrate the rich tapestry of the LGBTI community.

"We'll be celebrating Mardi Gras with a sustainability theme as well as a float with an electric rickshaw.

"Congratulations to the organisers for putting on what has consistently been one of the most important events in the News South Wales calendar.

Matthew Robertson said:

"The Greens have been long-term supporters of LGBTI pride and rights in New South Wales. I am excited to be a member of and march with the Greens, the only party who have always strongly supported the LGBTI community, including in marriage equality and anti-homophobia initiatives.

"Mardi Gras is a reminder of how far LGBTI rights have come in New South Wales, but also that much more needs to be done to achieve full equality and remove discrimination" he concluded.
