Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber today called for the establishment of
a judicial inquiry into the Hazelwood mine fire.

"The Premier should demonstrate some leadership by establishing a judicial
inquiry to get to the bottom of this entire debacle," said Greg Barber MLC

"This is a distressing and dangerous situation for Morwell residents. I
first called for a partial, medically-prioritised evacuation of Morwell on
17 February. Since then, people have been breathing ash and coughing up
muck. The Chief Health Officer has just confirmed this course of action.

"Yesterday was an embarrassment, when Mr Napthine offered his beach house
for the Port Fairy Folk Festival to one lucky family.

"The Premier should declare a state of emergency for Morwell so that
resources are made available and he can cut through the bureaucratic
infighting.

"The Greens have confidence that Victoria?s emergency services will
implement an orderly evacuation of people and work well with local
authorities. Declaring a State of Emergency is the proper way to give them
the certainty and resources to do their job.

"I extend my sympathies to the people of Morwell and again thank the paid
and voluntary emergency services workers who are at Hazelwood," said Mr
Barber.
