Newman Government sells out on democracy
The Australian Greens today condemned the Queensland LNP-chaired Parliamentary Review Committee's tick and flick of the Newman Government's scrapping of donation caps for political parties.
"The Newman Government and its review committee are manipulating the voting system to let big money run wild and to silence smaller parties," Queensland Greens Senator Larissa Waters said.
"Premier Newman is already a puppet for big business and mining magnates and now he's completely selling out.
"The Newman Government needs to represent all Queenslanders not just those that can afford to pay for its support.
"The review committee was right in concluding that the public funding threshold should not be raised to 10 per cent.
"Any increase to the public funding threshold will be a blow to everyone but the old parties.
"Raising the threshold will stifle new ideas and suffocate the diversity of our democratic representation," Senator Waters said.
