Greens SA Spokesperson for Gender & Sexuality, Tammy Franks MLC has announced that the Greens will reintroduce a Bill for State Marriage Equality when SA Parliament resumes after the March election.
"Despite the ACT legislation facing legal hurdles, we are confident that the Greens Bill has potential to survive a constitutional challenge. The Bill is based on legal advice from Constitutional experts such as Professor George Williams. Also there's a different Constitutional standing for States and Territories.
Ms Franks called on the Leader of the Opposition to "Have a heart this Valentine's Day" and declare a Liberal Party conscience vote on the issue before March 15 State Election.
She urged the Liberal Party leader to look to his party colleague Premier Barry O'Farrell in allowing both a conscience vote on marriage equality and to enable Liberal MPs to work with Labor, Greens and Independents on state-based same-sex marriage bill.
"Previously, The Greens have worked with Labor's Dr Susan Close MPs and Minister Ian Hunter.
We invite Liberal MPs to join us to give multi-party support to this important reform.
"Valentine's Day is a popular day for marriage proposals and weddings, wouldn't it be
heart-warming to see couples regardless of sexuality 'feeling the love' from the SA Liberal Leader today," concluded Ms Franks.
