Greens MP to visit Coffs Coast to Talk Transport and Environment

Greens NSW Transport Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, will be visiting the Coffs Coast and meeting with the local community to discuss local transport issues, such as concerns about safety on Waterfall Way as well as the lack of vision in New South Wales more generally. She will also visit the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Dr Faruqi will be visiting Coffs Harbour from the fifteenth to sixteenth of February.

"There has been a dramatic increase in the number of heavy vehicles using Waterfall Way, a vital link between the plateau and the coast. Local residents have told me that they have major concerns about road safety and the impact of the increased traffic on their community. School buses share this dangerous road and a school bus driver reports the daily risk to his passengers.

"I look forward to seeing the situation for myself, including as to whether it is appropriate for heavy trucks to be using a route with dangerous bends, blind corners and lack of road shoulders. The impact of heavy trucks on our valuable tourist towns must be minimised.
"What is happening on the Coffs Coast is symptomatic of the poor state of public transport especially in regional areas.

"The Government can find billions of dollars to fund the unnecessary WestConnex Tollway and the North West Rail Shuttle in Sydney but won't fund public transport options for the people of the Coffs Coast.

"I will also investigate concerns about the effect of logging on the threatened koalas of the Pine Creek State Forest.

"I also look forward to visiting the Solitary Islands Marine Park, which is a vital asset for the Coffs Coast tourism industry.

"The O'Farrell Government seems intent to undermine the state's marine park system so I look forward to meeting with the community to reassure them that the Greens will continue to defend our precious marine environment."

Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC is a civil and environmental engineer and former Director of the Institute of Environmental Studies and Academic Director of the Master of Business & Technology Program and Associate Professor at the Australian Graduate School of Management, University of NSW.
