Organic farmer into second day of David and Goliath court battle
Media statement, Tuesday, 11 February 2014.

A case which is the first of its kind worldwide entered its second day in court today, with Steve Marsh challenging his neighbouring farmer over responsibility for contaminated organic crops.

"My heart goes out to Steve Marsh, who has found himself at the forefront of this battle between non-GMO and GMO farmers", said Greens MLC Ms Lynn MacLaren.

"After three long years, Steve and his neighbours, the Baxters, finally have their time in court. This might have been avoided if the State Government had established better rules for growing GMO. I will continue my work in parliament for the State Government to legislate protection for farmers like Steve Marsh, there must be stricter regulations".

Marsh's case is the first time a farmer has challenged this loss of earnings; all eyes worldwide are on Steve Marsh's David and Goliath battle which challenges the farming regime brought about by corporate giant Monsanto.

"After just one day there are allegations of negligence emerging against Mr Baxter, hopefully this sends a message to Monsanto and the rest of the world that there are consequences for contamination, that the freedom of choice will prevail".

"I suspect if Monsanto had their way, there would be a greater tolerance for GM material in non-GM and organic crops. But consumers have spoken loud and clear that we want a choice to avoid GM food".
