Labor leadership turmoil distracts from state's needs
Media release: 24 December 2014
John Robertson's resignation as Opposition Leader is a symptom of the
infighting and jockeying for position that shows Labor has not changed much
since its disastrous 2011 election, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye
De Kaye said: "The people of NSW are sick and tired of the political
infighting and leadership instability.
"Whether it is the collapse of Barry O'Farrell's leadership, or yesterday's
own-goal resignation by Robertson, what people see is a circus that turns
them off politics.
"NSW needs political leaders who act out of principle and who are committed
to fairness, decency and sustainability.
"The letter was the last straw for a leadership that was already under
pressure from those whose ambition was greater than their commitment to
their party or the state.
"The two front runners for leadership are machine men, who played key roles
in Labor's tumultuous last four years in office.
"The state would be ill-served by a return to the politics and policies of
those years.
"John Robertson at least tried to move Labor on in a number of policy
areas, including electricity privatisation and TAFE.
"A return to the past would hand the March election to Premier Mike Baird
and Troy Grant," Dr Kaye said.
