Tomorrow morning Greens MP and Planning Spokesperson David Shoebridge will demonstrate exactly why the intercity train link to Newcastle is essential.
In a direct statement in support of the rail to Newcastle, Mr Shoebridge will join with community members and rail advocates, as he takes the 6:45am train from Central Sydney to Newcastle.
Despite strong recommendations from the inquiry into planning in Newcastle and the Hunter Region of which David was the Deputy Chair, the Government continues to push ahead with its unpopular and potentially illegal rail chop proposal.
WHEN: Tuesday 23 December 2014, 06:45am train, arriving Newcastle 9:42am
WHERE: Newcastle Press Conference at the entrance to Newcastle Station from 9:45am
WHO: Greens NSW MP David Shoebridge, Newcastle Greens Councillor Michael Osborne, community organisations and transport advocates.
Greens MP and Planning spokesperson David Shoebridge said:
"The NSW Government plans to cut this vital rail linkage on Boxing Day - a day when Australians are traditionally spending time with their families.
"This trip is intended as physical proof that the train line is an essential inter-city link.
"It is wonderful to see the united rail campaign running all the way from Parliament to the Courts and from Dungog to Sydney.
"Consider this a very public promise that, whatever the government does, we will not be swayed from supporting heavy rail to Newcastle Station.
"The Greens are committed to an ongoing campaign to keep the heavy rail so that Newcastle remains connected to, not just Sydney, but also Maitland and the Upper Hunter," Mr Shoebridge said.
