Death by neglect: Hamid's Manus Island tragedy

Leaked medical documents show that Hamid Kehazaei died of wilful neglect at the hands of the Immigration Minister who should be sacked as a result, the Australian Greens have said.

"Hamid died of culpable neglect at the hands of a cruel and uncaring Minister," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

"The details of Hamid's case, and the length of the delay in getting him off of the island, are shocking.

"When Hamid died, Scott Morrison called the level of care he received 'outstanding'. These documents show that it was anything but.

"The Immigration Minister is clearly not fit for the role and Tony Abbott should act to remove him immediately.

"The callous and regular refusal of appropriate medical care on Manus Island has been a disaster waiting to happen. The government must close the Manus camp now, before more people are allowed to die."
