Rattenbury welcomes Greens win in Melbourne

ACT Greens MLA, Shane Rattenbury has congratulated the Victorian Greens on their success in the Victorian Election over the weekend.

"I would particularly like to congratulate Ellen Sandell, who has been elected to the seat of Melbourne and will become the first Greens representative in the Lower House," said Mr Rattenbury.

"Provisional results suggest we will also see an increase in Greens members in the Upper House.

"The Victorian Greens took to the election a strong policy platform that called for better public transport, better clean energy laws, improvements to the TAFE system and enhanced preventative health care.

"The Greens presented a particularly strong voice calling for an end to the East West Link and increased investment in public transport.

"The community understands that building more roads is not the way to improve congestion and know that a strong public transport system is essential for any major city. The Greens were the only party that seriously voiced the community's concerns in the lead up to the election.

"I hope that the Abbott Government listens to the Victorian people and reinvests the $3billion earmarked for the East West Link into the Victorian public transport system.

"The results are very exciting for the Victorian Greens, with a larger number of candidates getting enough first preference votes to reach two-party preferred stage.

"It is clear that people can see that the Greens offer real solutions to the issues that are important to them," said Mr Rattenbury.
