We must work together to achieve marriage equality

If the Liberal Party says ‘I do’ to a conscience vote, Australia could have federally recognised same-sex marriages sooner rather than later, the Australian Greens said today.

“This Parliament can achieve marriage equality, but it will take all sides working together to make it happen,” the Greens’ LGBTI spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“The Greens will be reintroducing a marriage equality bill into the Senate once Parliament resumes and will be seeking co-sponsors for that bill from all parties.

“Establishing a cross-party working group on marriage equality will help to bring supporters together and boost the chances of passing this essential reform.

“Support for marriage equality has already crossed party lines. It’s not about ideology, it’s about equality and people from all sides of politics have recognised that in recent years.

“The states are leading the way on marriage equality, but a federal vote to end discrimination would settle this once and for all.

“We are saddled with this Coalition government, for better or worse, but if a conscience vote is allowed on marriage equality we may be able to end decades of senseless and painful discrimination.”
