Greens MP for the Western Suburbs Colleen Hartland completed her Western
Suburbs train station blitz this morning at Ascot Vale train station with
Denis Napthine (cardboard cut-out) under her arm.
"People have enjoyed seeing the cut out of Denis because they figure it's
going to be the only time they will see him using public transport" said
Colleen Hartland.
"The bad news is that in concluding this tour I can confirm that both
Coalition election promises to ‘fix public transport’ and ‘not neglect the
West’ have been abandoned."
"I just wish the real Premier had witnessed what I did, day after day, on
the Western Suburbs trains lines. I'm sure he wouldn't be sitting on his
laurels doing diddly-squat about public transport."
"I witnessed late trains every second day, and much bigger problems
shutting down whole train lines weren't uncommon."
"In speaking with commuters across the network two issues topped the hit
list - Myki and overcrowding. People are battling with both before they
even get on a train!"
"In the outer suburbs where train stations are few and far between, bus
connections and car parking problems were stark."
"To fix Public Transport in the West we need to have reliable trains
running at least every 10 minutes. An efficient train line can move the
same number of people as a 10 lane freeway, freeing up our roads for those
who cannot use trains such as trades-people and school drop offs" said Ms
Hartland.
Colleen Hartland visited every train station in her Western Suburbs
electorate - 43 train stations in 60 days. She used public transport on
her tour, but on the last day, trains on the Sydenham line and the
Craigieburn line were running so late she was forced to go back home and
drive her car.
