MEDIA ALERT: Victims of crime and their advocates respond to O’Farrell’s compensation cuts

The NSW Government has announced legislation to radically overhaul the NSW Victims Compensation Scheme, prompting an emergency meeting of survivors of abuse, their support organisations and providers of legal services, who have all been expressing serious concerns about the proposed changes.

What:        Members of parliament, survivors of abuse and their supporters, legal organisations and victims support networks will meet in NSW Parliament to discuss the likely effects of the government’s proposed changes to the NSW Victims Compensation Scheme.

When:       2 – 4pm, Wednesday 15 May 2013
Where:      Waratah Room, NSW Parliament House Macquarie St, Sydney.

Speakers include:

·         John Ellis - abuse survivor (famously failed to claim damages from the Catholic Church)

·         Jewel Jones – abuse survivor (has a victim’s compensation claim currently before the Victims Compensation Tribunal)

·         Liz Moore & Rachel Martin – Wirringa-Baiya Aboriginal Women’s Legal Centre

·         Nicky Davis – SNAP (Survivor’s Network of those Abused by Priests)
