Abbott a drag on local govt referendum prospects

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is risking the prospects of the referendum on local government referendum being a success by putting a last-minute question mark over the Coalition's support, said Greens local government spokesperson Lee Rhiannon (SMH, Abbott not ready to back local councils referendum tp://tinyurl.com/coeqm8l, 14 May 2013).

"It is irresponsible for Mr Abbott to play politics with the local government referendum. The Coalition's last-minute spoiler actions suggest that they do not want a Yes vote", said Senator Rhiannon.

"Referendums are notoriously difficult to pass and Mr Abbott would know that clear cross-party support is vital for local government recognition to have a shot at success.

"At a time when he should be showing leadership and ensuring all his MPs back the initiative Mr Abbott is letting some speak out against the referendum.

"Mr Abbott may claim he supports a change but if he does not give clear backing to the planned September referendum he will play havoc with the result.

"Today's comments by Mr Abbott will be seen as a set back by local governments that have worked so hard for this referendum.

"If Mr Abbott fails to speak out in favour of the referendum he is undermining financial security for local councils and the important community and infrastructure programs they deliver", said Senator Rhiannon.
