Essential for Australia to achieve marriage equality

An Essential poll has shown that the majority of people, regardless of which party they vote for, think the time for marriage equality has arrived, the Australian Greens said today.

"Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott are looking increasingly ridiculous and isolated as they remain stubbornly out-of-touch with their views on marriage equality," the Greens' LGBTI spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

"It is now clear that, if Australians want to see marriage equality, they need to vote Green in September because we are the only party representing the people's view on this issue.

"We have known for a long time that the majority of Australians support marriage equality, but now we know that the majority of Greens, Labor and Coalition voters all support this essential reform.

"Australian politicians work for the Australian people, not factional bully boys or vested interest groups, but it's clear the leaders of the old parties have forgotten that when it comes to marriage equality.

"As a first step towards equality, this Parliament needs to support the Greens Bill which will recognise international same-sex marriages in Australia.

"The Greens care for all Australians regardless of their sexuality but, as more and more countries choose to be on the right side of history, the opponents of equality are making sure we are left behind.

"Tony Abbott needs to grant Coalition members a conscience vote on this issue so that Australia can join New Zealand, the UK, Canada and many other countries as a champion of equality."
