Greens call on Kevin Rudd not to squib it on marriage equality

The new Labor Party cabinet, under Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, needs to commit to legislating marriage equality as a priority, the Australian Greens have said.

"I am calling on Kevin Rudd not to squib it on marriage equality. If he really cares, he will make it a cabinet priority," the Greens' LGBTI spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said today.

"Kevin Rudd needs to put marriage equality to his cabinet as an absolute priority so that the party, as a whole, can support it after the election.

"We don't need a referendum to bring about marriage equality. What we need is for parliament to get on with the job of representing the Australian people, the vast majority of whom want to see an end to discrimination.

"A full vote from Labor and the Greens in support of equal marriage would have seen it achieved in this parliament but, until now, the bully-boy factions of the ALP have made sure that didn't happen.

"It's time for the leaders of this country to recognise the inevitability of equality and get on with making it happen.

"The Greens will stand up for all Australians, regardless of their sexuality, now and long into the future. It's time for Kevin Rudd and the Labor Party to do the same."
