Obama plan goes further than Direct Action

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne has welcomed the US's new global warming action plan but it remains to be seen how successful it will be without an emissions trading scheme.

"Barack Obama has clearly stated his preference for an emissions trading scheme but is unable to pursue it because of the US parliament. The Coalition has no such impediment.

"Any attempts to compare the US plan to the Coalition's direct action plan are misleading.

"The Obama plan clamps down on emissions from coal-fired power stations, boosts investment in renewable energy, and ends the tax breaks for big oil. None of these are in the Coalition's plan.

"This is a clear signal from the US that's its moving on climate change. We now have the US and China working together to maximise the trade benefit of clean technology.

"Australia would be left high and dry under an Abbott government on climate policy and President Obama makes no time for flat Earthers. We will be increasingly isolated as the world moves towards a global emissions agreement in 2015.
