MPs to vote on Greens’ international same-sex marriage bill tomorrow
The Senate will vote on the Greens’ international same-sex marriage bill tomorrow, giving recognition to thousands of Australians in same-sex relationships that have been married overseas.
“Tomorrow’s vote is an opportunity for MPs to distance themselves from the recent, disgraceful comments of the Liberal Party’s main man in South Australia, Cory Bernardi,” the Greens’ LGBTI spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“This bill is simply about recognising those marriages that are already acknowledged by some of our closest allies including France, Canada and New Zealand.
“When same-sex couples from Australia get married overseas they return home to a terrible insult, with this government making them leave their marriages at the customs gate.
“Today I received a petition from Australian Marriage Equality in which more than 14,000 Australians call on Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott to back the Greens’ bill.
“One mother who signed the petition made a simple but powerful statement; ‘My beautiful son was born gay and deserves the same rights as every other human being’. I couldn’t agree more.
“So far the old parties have disappointed gay and lesbian Australians, but the Greens will continue to stand up for equality and a more caring society.”
