Greens welcome withdrawal of flawed CTP legislation
Media Release - 19 June 2013
The Greens have cautiously welcomed the O'Farrell government's decision to withdraw CTP reforms that were proposing to make savage cuts to the benefits paid to those injured on our roads.
Greens NSW MP David Shoebridge said:
"This is a substantial win for everyone in NSW because anyone can be injured in a motor accident and need support.
"The government's scheme proposed drastic cuts to benefits while doing nothing to address the underlying causes of cost increases.
"The public has finally seen the extent of the proposed cuts in benefits, to children and the long term injured.
"With a growing scandal around the privileged access that insurance companies were given to the government in the drafting of the legislation, this legislation had less and less friends.
"While the bill has been withdrawn, substantial concern remains that the government will use the winter break to get Shooters MP support for the reforms in return for hunting in National Parks.
"Rather than cut another pro-insurer deal on green slips, the government should deliver legislation which addresses the real problems in the scheme - the super profits premiums gouged by insurance companies," Mr Shoebridge said.
