Media release – Smokefree outdoor dining rejected by Government
Victorian Greens Health Spokesperson Colleen Hartland has slammed the 
Liberal Government and the Labor Party for voting against the Greens 
proposed legislation that would see outdoor drinking and dining areas 
become smokefree.
“The old parties have shown their true colours on smoking. They have 
rejected the advice of health specialists and the wishes of the majority 
of Victorians and refused to make outdoor dining smokefree.” said Colleen 
Hartland
“The Napthine Government is pandering to vested interests, putting them 
ahead of the health and wellbeing of the Victorian people. This proves you 
can’t trust the old parties to look after your health.”
“There are no excuses for the Government not passing this proposed 
legislation. If they have issues with the consultation of special interest 
groups they should have sent the bill to committee for inquiry. Instead 
they rejected the bill altogether.”
 “The Victorian Government, winner of the AMA’s Dirty Ashtray Ward the 
last two years running, had the opportunity to redeem itself and show that 
it is strongly committed to protect the lives of Victorians from smoking. 
They have let us all down.”
 “The Government has rejected the expert advice of health specialists and 
failed to act. Greens are the only party who are putting the health and 
wellbeing of Victorian’s first.”
 “Smoking isn't a freedom, it's an addiction. Smokefree outdoor dining 
will help people kick the habit.”
The Greens bill aimed to ban smoking in outdoor dining and drinking areas 
and other crowded outdoor settings, including: within 10 metres of 
children’s playground equipment, within 4 metres of public transport 
stops, at organised sporting events and on the beaches of Port Phillip Bay 
and Western Port Bay.
