Robot trains can't be programmed for an emergency - Greens

Greens MP and transport spokesperson Cate Faehrmann says any decision
to use driverless trains on the North West Rail Link will put
commuters at increased risk during an emergency and make customer
service worse - not better.

"New technology and state of the art safety equipment doesn't negate
the need for trained and experienced drivers to improve amenity and
look after passengers in an emergency," said Ms Faehrmann.

'It doesn't make sense to be constantly talking up the need for better
customer service and then replace people with machines. This is all
about cost cutting - it's pretty transparent.

"The Minister's suggestion that trains with drivers is "20th century
technology" is an insult to the drivers who are actually the backbone
of the system. The problems we have are not because of the workforce -
it's decades of under investment and poor management from
governments," said Ms Faehrmann.
